Revit Step Pattern Repeaters Part 2

Further to my recent post of 6 June on Revit Step Pattern Repeaters, here are a couple more methods to achieve step repeaters: Step Patterns Method 3 The previously created 1 point adaptive box could have an additional parameter added to it - to allow it to be offset to the right from its centrepoint origin.  At its simplest it just needs a parameter from centre to left side - if set at half

Revit Scaleable Spline Tree Family

Having returned from RTC in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago, I decided to put into practice some of the things that I learnt at the conference.  It was another great Revit conference in a fabulous location - Vancouver is a beautiful city, and the waterfront has been really well designed and carried out.  Aside from catching up with friends, I met lots of interesting people and attended plenty of

Credits First This post would not have happened without discussions at RTC or blog posts by the following people: Marcello Sgambelluri who loves to push the boundaries of Revit, and got this discussion about scaling families going with his presentations at RTC and his blog post on scaling classical columns back in February 2013 Kelvin Tam for his "Revit Swat" blog post on scaling families by

Mona Lisa's Eyes Follow the Revit Camera Wherever it Goes

Using Adaptive Components to make Mona Lisa's whole face follow you around the room Have you ever wanted to make all your 2.5d trees or people face the camera in a perspective view in Revit?  No?  Well I'm going to tell you how anyway - maybe it will help someone come up with new ideas of how to use this technique. First create a new "Generic Adaptive Model" family; Place two points along

RTC Europe - Fractal Fun with Revit Repeaters and Adaptive Components

On 27th September 2013 I will be presenting at the Revit Technology Conference in Delft in the Netherlands. The topic of my presentation will be: "Fractal Fun with Revit Repeaters and Adaptive Components" - this will be a new, improved version of the presentations that I gave at RTC in Auckland and Vancouver earlier this year.  Yes, RTC is so good that I'll be attending at all three venues

How to Indent a Revit Repeater on a Divided Surface

In a recent post by Andy Milburn over on Shades of Grey, he mentioned that it is not possible to indent the edges of a divided surface.  Well, that is absolutely true - Divided surfaces are unlike divided paths, which have an indent setting so that you can push the start or end nodes of the path in from ends of the underlying path. Divided Path indent settings The implication of this is that

Having recently returned from the inuagural European Revit Technology Conference I thought I'd give a quick report on how it all went.  Having been to all the RTC events this year, and all but one RTC ever, it was interesting to compare this event with others. The Venue Firstly, the venue was amazing - a mixture of old and new in the historic city of Delft in the Netherlands.  Delft

Circular repeater geometry in Revit

In previous posts I have described how easy it is in Revit to use a circle as a rig to host regular geometric shapes like squares and hexagons.  It occurred to me the other day that circles would also be ideal hosts for parametric stars;  put that together with Repeaters and you get some interesting possibilities . . . Here is how to create a parametric star: Create a new adaptive component;

Geometric Patterns from Parametric Revit Stars

In my previous post I showed how to make a parametric star in Revit - one that has a variable number of points.  Here are some examples of how that might be used in a parametric pattern.  I have shown something a little like this previously and also in my RTC 2012 presentation, but that was done using a fixed number of points in the star, although it changed shaped parametrically. Rival Revit Environments - Traditional vs CME

For the first decade of its life, Revit really only had one method of creating 3 dimensional forms - in the Family Editor (aside from those generated by system families).  When Revit 2010 was released we suddenly had a whole new way of doing things with the new conceptual massing tools.  Since then, many people have been grappling with the seeming divergence of these two very different Revit

Winder Stairs in Revit 2013

Revit Stair By Component Revit 2013 introduced the concept of stairs by component.  Two of the new stair run component types were for creating "Winder Stairs".   Winder Stairs   When I first tested these new tools I really struggled to get them to work at all, let alone well. I suspect that many people have since tried and failed to use them successfully. Here are a few tips that might

Oaho, Hawaii In late 2011 I started beta testing the new Revit component based stair tools, and I learned a lot about the subtleties - both good things and shortcomings.  In early 2012, the new tools were released as part of Revit 2013.  In May 2012 I did a presentation on the new stair tools at the Revit Technology Conference in Wollongong, NSW, Australia. In Revit v2014, very little

When Revit v2013 was released it gave us the first version of a great new feature:  Repeater.  Repeaters are an alternative way of creating arrays in Revit, but they only work in the conceptual massing environment (Adaptive Components and Massing) where the tradional Revit array tool is not available. I presented a paper on the topic "Divide and Conquer: Adaptive Components in Revit 2013"

Having joined the RUGS committee in 2008 as treasurer I finally got a promotion: This year I took over as chairman of RUGS from Steve Fiorio - a post he had held since 2012. We believe that RUGS is the oldest formal Revit User Group in the world.  This has been confirmed by Autodesk, and no other group has yet claimed the title. Initiated by Wesley Benn, the first meeting was held in May 2003

U-Shaped Winder Stairs in Revit

Go to Revit Stair & Railings Index Page In a previous post on Revit winder stairs I suggested that on a U-Shape Single Point winder it is not possible to control the number of parallel treads on the middle section between the two corners of the winders.  So you could end up with a stair that has parallel treads on the lower and upper sections but looks more like a balanced winder stair in the

New Sketchy Lines in Revit 2015

The big new feature for architects in Revit 2015 is the Sketchy Lines setting for views.  I have found some interesting subtleties in the way that it works. In the Graphics Display Options dialog box there is a new section for "Sketchy Lines" Firstly there is an "Enable" checkbox to turn the effect on or off - initially it seems to do nothing because the default slider settings are zero.

Adaptive Component Origins in Revit

Have you ever wondered how Revit manages the "Origin" (X,Y,Z = 0,0,0) of an adaptive component? It is somewhat different from the way it handles origins and insertion points of traditional Revit families.  So here is an analysis of the differences between the two. Traditional Family Insertion Points A traditional Revit family typically has three reference planes that intersect at the origin

We still don't have a definitive list of what is new in Revit 2015, but here are a few more details about some of the new features - with the proviso that I don't have my hands on the final release version so I can't be a 100% sure I have the details right.  But you will be able to test the software as soon as you have it, and you'll know what to look for.
